The Arrowhead District Spring Camporee is scheduled for Friday evening to Sunday morning, April 20 to 22, 2012.

Where: The Camporee will be held at Wolf Road Woods in the Palos division of the Cook County Forest Preserves. It is at the southern end of the road from the entrance just west of Maple Lake off of 95th Street. There is plenty of room for camping but we do expect a large crowd. Please set up your campsite intelligently that allows room for the others that will follow.

What: The Spring Camporee will be a Fun and achievement-oriented event designed to help advance your boys in rank. The specific rank requirements covered will be First Class reqs. 1, 2, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8c, Second Class req. 5 and Joining req. 6. These requirements address knots, lashings and a bit of first aid. We chose these requirements because they seem to be ones that many units have trouble achieving.

Our unique twist for this event is that, for the Saturday morning activities, we will divide all the scouts into two simple categories: those that can instruct the requirements and those that need instructing. Those that have the knowledge will instruct those that don’t. This concept – boys helping boys – is as old as Scouting itself and is very effective.

So between now and the Camporee it will be imperative that the units divide their boys. The boys who would be “instructors” must know their stuff. For the boys who would be “instructees”, the units should refrain from working on these requirements so they can get them at the Camporee.

On Saturday afternoon, we will have a patrol competition so the boys can prove their skills. The boys will participate in an orienteering course unlike any they have seen before. Along the way, they will find stations where they can show they have completed the requirements.

Lastly, there will be a Scout campfire Saturday night. “Large” will be one adjective you will use to describe this fire. The units should “be prepared” with their best songs and skits.

Webelos scouts are most definitely invited! They must camp with a sponsoring troop. If you don’t have one, we will find one for you. The Webelos Scouts can participate in Saturday morning’s activities but will not be allowed on the orienteering course. Instead we will have separate activities for these boys.

Who: This event is conducted by the Arrowhead District of the Chicago Area Council. Contact either Jim Adamitis (708) 423 0687(h), (708) 269 2909(c) or Herb Koch (708) 361 2483(h) or (708) 577 3156(c) for more information.

Why: We’re hoping to make this the best district event your boys have ever attended!

Homan Avenue, in Evergreen Park.

The training will run from 9:00am until Noon. Cost is $3.00.

Merit Badge Counselor Registration Procedures

In order to help streamline the Merit Badge Counselors Renewal Process the Chicago Area Council’s Advancement Committee has approved the following change.

Every three years all merit badge counselor applicants must fill out the Merit Badge counselor application. If they are a registered Scouter in the Chicago Area Council they will not have to complete an Adult Volunteer Leader Application. Only those requesting to be renewed as a Merit Badge Counselor who are not registered Scouters in the Chicago Area Council will need to complete the Adult Volunteer Application. It is the responsibility of the applicant to see that the applications are forwarded to the proper place. The procedures are as follows.

Applicant sends unit copy of the adult application, if required, and the original copy of the Merit badge counselor application to the District Advancement Committee Chair. If the applicant is applying at a council level that application should be forwarded to the council advancement committee.

Applicant sends the original adult leader application and a copy of the Merit Badge Counselor application to the Scout Office.

All Merit Badge Counselors must submit a new application every 3 years.

If there is a problem with the Merit Badge Counselor Application, applicant will be notified by his/her District Advancement Committee Chair.

Failure to follow these instructions will delay the process.

Please Note: When registering as a Merit Badge Counselor for the first time, all applicants
must complete an Adult Volunteer Leader Application regardless of their status as a
registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
